Direct Relief Largest International Nonprofit in California, New Survey Says
Chronicle of Philanthropy Ranks Organization Tops in Amount of Private Support
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (October 29, 2007) - Direct Relief International was the 11th largest international charity in the United States during 2006 in terms of private support received, and the 55th largest charity overall by the same measure, according to the Philanthropy 400 survey released by the Chronicle of Philanthropy today.
Direct Relief jumped in the overall rankings from 115 in last year's survey to 55 in this year's results by virtue of $241,012,480 in private support, the largest amount ever received by the organization in a single year.
While the overall private support to nonprofits in the international category shrank by 6.3 percent, Direct Relief's support jumped more than 78 percent to $241 million. During that same time frame, fundraising costs dropped nearly 10 percent to $535,881, the 11th lowest fundraising costs of any charity in the category.
Within its home state of California, Direct Relief remains the largest international nonprofit organization as it has been for the past two years.
The survey used data from Direct Relief's fiscal year ending March 31, 2007.
