Forbes: Direct Relief International 100 Percent Efficient in Fundraising
One of only two national groups to receive distinction for sixth straight year
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (November 26, 2007) For the sixth straight year, financial magazine Forbes has given Direct Relief International a perfect score of 100 percent for fundraising efficiency.
Direct Relief is the only California-based nonprofit organization and one of two charities nationwide to have received a perfect fundraising efficiency score from Forbes for each of the past six years.
Forbes' annual rating of 200 top American charities "calculates three major efficiency ratios for each nonprofit" – charitable commitment, fundraising efficiency, and donor dependency. Based on these three measures, Forbes named Direct Relief the second most efficient “big charity” in the United States.
The organization received a score of 99 percent in the "charitable commitment" category, which measures "how much of the total expense went directly to the charitable purpose."
In the category of donor dependency, which "tries to measure how badly a nonprofit needs [a] contribution to break even," Forbes scored Direct Relief 64 percent. Last year, Direct Relief received the highest score of any nonprofit in the survey, 154 percent. This change is due to Direct Relief receiving a large infusion of contributions at the end of the year that were not spent prior to year’s end.
Forbes’ rating comes on the heels of other recent positive assessments of Direct Relief by outside groups:
- Membership in the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance
- Charity Navigator: Named Direct Relief a Four Star Charity, their highest ranking
- Chronicle of Philanthropy: Rated Direct Relief as California’s largest international charity based on private support
