Charity Navigator Names Direct Relief International to “10 of the Best Charities Everyone’s Heard Of”
Santa Barbara, Calif. – Top nonprofit evaluator Charity Navigator has named humanitarian medical aid organization Direct Relief International to its annual list of “10 of the Best Charities Everyone’s Heard Of,” published on CharityNavigator.org on September 1.
According to Charity Navigator, all organizations on the list have budgets exceeding $100 million, have at least $65 million in net assets, and have “became household names in part because of their exceptional financial management, no easy feat considering the scope and size of their operations. Charitable givers should feel confident that these national institutions put their donations to good use.”
In Fiscal Year 2008 (ended March 31), Direct Relief leveraged every $1 spent into more than $36 (wholesale value) in medical aid to help the poor and uninsured receive the medical care they need. Thanks to a generous bequest made in 2006, Direct Relief covers its own fundraising and administrative costs (1.2 percent of its operating budget), so all donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations go directly to support worldwide programs.
Direct Relief was one of two California-based nonprofits to make the list, the other being City of Hope in Duarte.
