The State of the U.S. Safety Net

Direct Relief estimates that there are more than 10,000 nonprofit clinics and health centers that serve more than 23 million people annually. These facilities and their staffs provide care regardless of a person’s insurance status, income, or ability to pay, and they are a large, essential component of the U.S. healthcare safety net for people who otherwise have limited options to access essential care.

Due to the critical role these clinics play, Direct Relief developed its State of the Safety Net report, which summarizes national information about the activities at America’s nonprofit community-based clinics, free clinics, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Our goal is to share relevant and timely insights from, and about, this critical group of providers.

We hope our State of the Safety Net report serves as a resource for the important stories, data, reflections and interactions about the patients, communities, and environments of this crucial group, which helps enable millions of people to get the care they need to lead healthy lives. You can keep up to date on news on our blog.
