Emergency Update: Pakistan / Afghanistan Earthquake, 10/26

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Badakhshan region near the border with Pakistan early Monday morning. So far, most of the damage and casualties are reported in the Pakistani cities of Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Peshawar.  The most recent death toll stands at 147 in Pakistan and 33 in Afghanistan. Those numbers are expected to rise as response teams reach the remote and mountainous regions of the Hindu Kush.  This region has experienced uncharacteristically heavy rain and snowfall, which heightens the concern of future landslides, especially after the expected aftershocks.

The Direct Relief Emergency Response team has spoken with numerous partners in the region, and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
