7.2-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Mexico

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake was reported in Oaxaca, Mexico, Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred 10 miles from Santiago Amoltepec, Oaxaca. Direct Relief’s Mexico staff are assessing needs in the area and are ready to respond.

Friday’s earthquake comes just months after a devastating temblor rocked the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, and another earthquake wreaked havoc weeks later in Mexico City. The earthquakes left hundreds dead and critically injured.

In response to the earthquakes, Direct Relief established a warehouse in Oaxaca as a distribution point and has supported recovery in the region since.
