Emergency Alert: Volcanic Eruption – Hawaii

Lava flows, heavy ash and noxious gas erupting from the Kilauea Volcano have prompted mandatory evacuations across Hawaii’s Big Island.

Volcanic activity also triggered a 6.9 magnitude earthquake Friday afternoon that shook the island and was felt as far away as Oahu, according to news reports.

As many as 600 earthquakes have been recorded this week, according to USGS reports.

In response, Direct Relief has reached out to Hawaii health centers that care for 20 percent of the islands total population and 57 percent of low-income residents. Direct Relief has also extended offers of assistance to health center partners on other islands that may care for evacuees.

Direct Relief will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves, and stands ready to respond should the need arise.
