Hurricane Willa Churns Toward Mexico’s Pacific Coast

A Category 5 storm is roaring toward Mexico’s western coast, and is expected to make landfall Tuesday.

Hurricane Willa is expected to weaken slightly as it comes ashore, but “is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the coast of Mexico,” according to a statement from the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall anywhere from Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta.

Storm surge and flash flooding are a concern, and up to 18 inches of rain is possible in western Jalisco, western Nayarit and southern Sinaloa.

Direct Relief has staff in Mexico City and is monitoring the storm’s path and potential impacts.
