Over the past seven days, Direct Relief has delivered 402 shipments of requested medical aid to 43 U.S. states and territories and fifteen countries worldwide.
The shipments contained 8 million defined daily doses of medication, including insulin, antibiotics, personal care products, vitamins, and more.
bolstered Support for Ukraine
This week, Direct Relief announced its broadest financial package of medical aid for Ukrainians to date through $7.9 million in financial support to organizations providing critical health and rehabilitation services to Ukrainians and Ukrainian refugees facing debilitating injuries and other severe trauma caused or compounded by the ongoing war.
Direct Relief announced the grants this week at events in Ukraine and Slovakia. Attendees included leadership from Direct Relief, the city of Lviv, the Ukrainian organization Unbroken, the U.S. Embassy in Slovakia, the Slovak Ministry of Health and Crisis Management Department, and Slovakian organizations that included the League for Mental Health and Fire Medical.
Since Feb. 24, Direct Relief has provided medical aid to Ukraine weighing more than 2.2 million pounds, or 1,100 tons, with more on the way.
Over the past week, Direct Relief has provided critical emergency items to Ukraine, including insulin pens and vials, and nutritional products.
U.S. StormS
A widespread storm system has impacted much of the South and Eastern United States over the past week. On Tuesday, the storm caused damage and injuries around Dallas, Texas. At least three people were killed in Louisiana due to the storm and associated tornadoes.
A tornado also struck New Iberia, Louisiana, and damaged several buildings at the Iberia Medical Center. Many homes were damaged across Louisiana on Wednesday. Blizzard-like conditions are now impacting much of the Great Plains with significant freezing rain into the northeast, with Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland expecting as much as a half-inch of ice, which will result in widespread power outages.
Direct Relief is communicating with health organizations as the storm moves across the country. These include the Louisiana Primary Care Association, the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, and The Texas Primary Care Association. The organization will continue to monitor the effects of this storm.
