Operational Update: Critical Aid Continues to Arrive in Turkey, Missouri Tornado Response

Over the past seven days, Direct Relief has delivered 493 shipments of requested medical aid to 47 U.S. states and territories and eight countries worldwide.

The shipments contained 8.8 million defined daily doses of medication, including antibiotics, nutritionals, trauma care supplies, and more.

Turkey-Syria Earthquake Response

This week, 80 tons of requested medical aid arrived in Turkey via Direct Relief chartered FedEx MD-11 cargo aircraft. The emergency supplies and medications were received by The Ministry of Health of Turkey, which will distribute the supplies to medical facilities located in the most heavily impacted provinces of Hatay, Adiyaman, Kahramanmaras, Malatya, and Gaziantep.

With this latest infusion of support to the recovering region, Direct Relief has provided more than 215 tons of medical aid to Turkey in response to the earthquakes, from emergency medic packs — which contain items to address trauma, including tourniquets and wound dressings — to diabetes and cancer medications.

Local groups have begun distributing the requested medical supplies to healthcare clinics and hospitals throughout the country.

Missouri Tornado Response

On Wednesday, April 5, an early morning tornado caused widespread damage in Bollinger County, Missouri. Five people have been reported dead, with multiple additional roadway injuries reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

In response, Direct Relief contacted the Missouri Primary Care Association, the Missouri Association of Free Clinics, and National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) to extend support and assistance. Direct Relief also sent an alert message to all health center and clinic partners in Missouri to offer available inventory.

So far, Direct Relief has shipped 150 Emergency Family Hygiene Kits, water purification tablets, and additional nutritional products to Samaritan Regional Health Clinic located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The organization is assessing further needs and will respond as requested.

Material aid for Ukraine

This coming week, Direct Relief will be sponsoring a conference of rehabilitation groups in Lviv, Ukraine, in coordination with the Ukrainian organization, Unbroken. The forum will bring together Ukrainian rehabilitation specialists with an emphasis in technology and innovation.

Since Feb. 24, 2022, Direct Relief has provided medical aid to Ukraine weighing more than 2.6 million pounds, or 1,300 tons, with more on the way.

These shipments contained 167.6 million defined daily doses of medication valued at $473 million (wholesale), totaling 2.4 million lbs.
