Emergency Response – Current Efforts

Email Page

Direct Relief’s response efforts are fast, involve local partners, and are coordinated with other international organizations and governmental authorities to ensure the most efficient use of resources. In recent years, there have been several reports showing how the introduction of non-essential or un-needed items can actually impede relief efforts by clogging in-country logistics and distribution channels. To avoid this impedance, Direct Relief sends only specifically requested aid to partners who appeal for its aid.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, U.S. Gulf Coast
August 23, 2005

Nearly two years has passed since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast, affecting over one million people and resulting in the largest natural disaster in U.S. history.  In response, Direct Relief has furnished $31.4 million in assistance to more than 100 healthcare partners throughout the Gulf Coast, comprised of $26.8 million (wholesale) in medical material aid and $4.6 million in targeted cash grants. This assistance helped people receive critical care in a time of utmost need.

Our work in the Gulf continues today. In March, Direct Relief provided $75,000 to fund the employment of a nurse midwife to oversee maternal and child health services at two key health centers in the New Orleans area.

Direct Relief is a licensed pharmacy distributor and wholesaler in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, and Texas. These licenses allow Direct Relief to assist resource-strapped clinics with their work today and develop efficient channels for future emergency response assistance.
