Direct Relief is a recognized international partner of Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and supports healthcare providers nationwide with requested medical aid—including trauma supplies, cancer therapies, insulin, cold-chain medications, and chemical antidote countermeasures.
In addition to medical aid, Direct Relief has committed more than $75 million in financial assistance to health organizations and institutions in Ukraine and regionally, funding complex reconstructive surgeries, rehabilitation centers, mental health services, pediatric transport, and resilient backup power.
Direct Relief is deploying urgently needed medical aid directly to Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, with which it has a standing agreement, and to other on-the-ground healthcare organizations in Ukraine and throughout the region.
Since the war broke out, Direct Relief has delivered more than 3,200 tons (6.4 million pounds) of medical assistance, equivalent to 546 million defined daily doses of critical medicines, trauma supplies, and cold-chain therapeutics to frontline hospitals and community clinics.
Direct Relief has also supplied the Ukrainian Ministry of Health with hundreds of emergency medical backpacks for first responders working in the field and dealing with trauma, blast injuries, infections, and acute emergency care.

Medical Needs in Ukraine
The impact of ongoing warfare on Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure remains severe. Beyond acute trauma treatment, health systems are strained by ongoing missile strikes on energy infrastructure and humanitarian supply depots, compounding risks for patients with chronic and complex conditions.
Resilient Backup Power
Direct Relief has invested more than $12 million in backup power, deploying over 2,000 battery storage units to facilities like Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital and the National Cancer Institute in Kyiv to keep ICUs, maternity wards, and surgical theaters running during grid collapse.
Rehabilitation & Surgery
Supporting the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv and surgical teams through the Penn Center for Global Health, Direct Relief equips clinicians with advanced training, 3D-printed facial implants, and prosthetics for severe blast and burn trauma.
Humanitarian crises invariably lead to a wide range of cascading health problems:
- Interruption of chronic therapies: Inability to access daily insulin, cardiovascular medicines, or cancer chemotherapy leads directly to preventable mortality.
- Maternal and pediatric crisis: Disruptions require emergency frontline training for midwives to safely deliver babies in basements and bomb shelters.
- Lasting psychological trauma: The toll of prolonged bombardment requires sustained psychosocial support and trauma-informed clinical care across all age groups.
Direct Relief continues to work directly with global manufacturers and local partners across Ukraine to ensure essential medicines, surgical materials, and cold-chain therapies remain available wherever needs are greatest.
