Nepal’s health system navigates some of the most challenging terrain on earth. In remote mountain districts, a single health post may serve communities a full day’s walk away across steep river valleys. When monsoon landslides, floods, or earthquakes sever those routes, access to lifesaving medical care is cut off entirely.

Direct Relief works directly with Nepali hospitals, community health posts, and local nonprofit organizations to ensure healthcare providers have what they need—both in times of acute crisis and in the quiet months between disasters. Support focuses on requested essential medicines for chronic disease and maternal care, resilient cold-chain storage, solar microgrids, and pre-positioned field medic packs that enable local teams to deploy immediately without waiting for international logistics.

Direct Relief’s partnership with Nepal began in 1985 with a tuberculosis control program serving Tibetan refugee communities. Over four decades, that support has expanded into a nationwide network providing continuous, requested medical aid and infrastructure support across the country.

Responding to Crises in Nepal

2026 — Bhote Koshi Flash Floods

A glacial lake collapse near the Nepal-China border sent catastrophic floodwaters down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli valleys, destroying critical roads, bridges, and local health infrastructure across Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Direct Relief issued immediate emergency operating grants to Mountain Heart Nepal and mobilized pre-positioned medical supplies and field packs to reach cut-off mountain villages while coordinating relief shipments with Nepal’s Ministry of Health.

2023 — Western Nepal Earthquake

When a magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck remote communities in western Nepal, local medical teams deployed with Direct Relief medical packs to deliver trauma care, emergency triage, and wound treatment in rugged areas where terrain complicated traditional evacuation.

2020–2021 — COVID-19 & Oxygen Infrastructure

In response to severe pandemic-related oxygen shortages, Direct Relief delivered ICU kits and critical medicines to Dhulikhel Hospital and funded a permanent, on-site medical oxygen generation plant at Siddhasthali Rural Community Hospital—ensuring long-term self-sufficiency rather than temporary relief.

2015 — Gorkha Earthquake

Following the devastating April 25 earthquake, Direct Relief committed $500,000 in direct cash grants and chartered multiple cargo airlifts carrying over 145 tons of requested medical aid. Field teams deployed mobile GIS mapping to assess clinic damage offline and navigate destroyed transit routes, partnering with Patan Hospital, Doctors for You, One Heart Worldwide, and the Midwifery Society of Nepal to restore birthing centers and long-term primary care.

2014 — Monsoon Floods & Landslides

Direct Relief routed emergency medicines and trauma supplies to local health facilities across central Nepal when heavy seasonal flooding cut off vulnerable districts from standard supply chains.
