100 Low-Income Area Kids Get Free Dental Care at Direct Relief International’s “Healthy Smiles” Clinic
Santa Barbara kids and Direct Relief International will be joined by Congresswoman Lois Capps and other business and community leaders to kick off a week-long dental clinic at the Direct Relief International headquarters, located in Goleta. Four mobile dental clinics will be set up to treat the 100 children throughout the week, who have been identified by Santa Barbara County Schools. Dental disease is one of the foremost health problems affecting children in Santa Barbara.

Direct Relief International Supplies Aid to Refugees From Afghanistan
Direct Relief International has redirected a shipment of medical supplies and medicines intended for distribution in Afghanistan to the Pakistan border town of Peshawar to handle the influx of Afghani refugees along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Originally planned for three facilities in the poorest sections of Kabul, the supplies include antibiotics, sulfa drugs, anti-fungal agents, pre-natal vitamins, cardiovascular medications, and analgesics.

Casa Dorinda Donates Hospital Beds for El Salvador Quake Victims
With the country of El Salvador still reeling from the after-effects of two devastating earthquakes in January and February, Santa Barbara’s Casa Dorinda retirement community is pitching in to help out. Casa Dorinda has donated 28 state-of the-art, motorized hospital beds for Direct Relief International to send to charitable health care facilities in El Salvador. DRI will send the beds through the Salvadoran-American Foundation, a long-time partner which operates 34 hospitals and clinics in the Central American nation.

Effectiveness of Drug Donations in Crisis Areas Examined
Direct Relief International Development Advisor Christopher Brady has just returned from East Timor, where he was taking part in a World Bank and World Health Organization study of drug donations in emergency settings. As a member of the Partnership for Quality Medical Donations (PQMD), an alliance of relief agencies and health care firms, DRI is one of four represented non-government organizations that was asked to participate in this study. DRI, a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit humanitarian aid organization, has sent a large amount of emergency medical supplies to East Timor, where hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by civil strife. Brady says he witnessed scenes of utter devastation there, with practically every building in the areas he traveled to reduced to rubble.

‘Window on the World’ to Be Installed at Direct Relief International
Nadya Penoff, a world-renowned stained glass artist, has spent the past six months guiding her local Adult Education class through the creation of a magnificent new stained glass window to be installed at the headquarters of Direct Relief International, Santa Barbara’s own global humanitarian aid organization. The window, measuring 40″ x 69″, is a colorfully rendered representation of a map of the world. It will be installed at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 22 in a mahogany frame in the reception area of Direct Relief headquarters at 27 South La Patera Lane.

Direct Relief Announces Year-End Results
The year 2000 marked a major turning point in the 53-year history of Direct Relief International, Santa Barbara’s own global humanitarian aid organization. The agency sent a record-setting $67.1 million in medical relief shipments to 53 countries worldwide, topping its previous high of $52.8 million in 1999 by more than $14 million. Some 10 million people were directly helped by these aid shipments, including victims of the earthquakes in Turkey, civil unrest in Sierra Leone, Zambia and Eritrea, and deadly floods in Mozambique and Cambodia.
Forbes Names Direct Relief International One of America’s Ten Most Efficient Charities
Forbes magazine has cited Direct Relief International, a Santa Barbara-based humanitarian aid organization, as one of the ten best charities in the United States with regard to fundraising efficiency. The ranking, reported in the December 11 issue of Forbes, is based on the magazine’s comparative study of U.S. nonprofit organizations to assess which made the most efficient use of donations received.
