Direct Relief's Activities in Honduras
Honduras is a Central American nation, bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Guatemala and Nicaragua. Forty-six percent of its population of 7.6 million lives on less than US $2 per day. Nearly one-third of Hondurans lack sustainable access to safe sanitation, while 13 percent lack sustainable access to safe water supplies.

Direct Relief has provided over $15 million (wholesale) in medical material assistance to Honduras since 2000, focusing on basic medical supplies and maternal child health.
Direct Relief's partners in Honduras include Project Global Village (Proyecto Aldea Global, PAG), a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the well-being of thousands of Honduran families. Project Global Village integrates education, training, and health programs in order to build health infrastructure and establish a new generation of leaders able to recognize and resolve their own problems. Direct Relief has donated a range of medicines and medical supplies to support these ongoing and progressive healthcare initiatives.
Hacienda Cristo Salva is a health project focusing on providing basic medical services and combating malnutrition among the over 5,000 indigenous people who inhabit this remote area. This health project distributes nutritional supplements to children and pregnant women, gives antiparasitic medication to children, and provides education regarding diet and nutrition to mothers and families. Direct Relief's ongoing assistance allows the project staff to address basic health problems and to help prevent or reduce the severity of numerous diseases exacerbated by malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
