Awards and Recognitions

Over the last ten years, Direct Relief has received numerous awards and recognitions from some of the nation’s best independent evaluators of charities and humanitarian relief organizations. Direct Relief was recently recognized by Forbes as “100% efficient,” and “[among the] 20 most efficient large U.S. charities.”

In addition, Direct Relief maintains Charity Navigator’s highest 4-star rating, and was recently ranked #4 on the rating organization’s “10 Top-Notch Charities” list, which is composed of charities recognized for high-performance in a number of key areas: financial, accountability, transparency, effectiveness and results.

Direct Relief was also the recipient of the 2011 Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. Upon honoring Direct Relief, the Drucker Institute’s Executive Director Rick Wartzman noted Direct Relief’s “fundamental insight—to take the best in private-sector technology and uniquely adapt it for the social sector—has greatly strengthened a weak link in the medical supply chain…It’s efforts demonstrate that social-sector organizations can achieve the very highest levels of efficiency.”

Forbes Magazine: Forbes recognized Direct Relief as 100% efficient in fundraising amongst nonprofit organizations in the United States.

Charity Navigator: In addition to being named a 4-Star Charity this year, Direct Relief was cited in 2008 as the No. 1 “Slam-Dunk Charity” in the country and had the lowest percentage of funds spent on administrative and fundraising costs of the ten charities named. Charity Navigator is America’s largest independent evaluator of charities.

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness.

CharityWatch includes Direct Relief among it’s Top Rated charities, “based on rigorous analysis. Groups included on the Top-Rated list generally spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs, spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support, do not hold excessive assets in reserve, and receive ‘open-book’ status for disclosure of basic financial information and documents to CharityWatch.”

NonProfit Times: The NonProfit Times ranked Direct Relief as the No. 1 “Biggest Mover” of 2008 in its “NPT 100″ charity rankings. Direct Relief maintains one of the smallest fundraising budgets of all the charities on the list.

Better Business Bureau: The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance has noted Direct Relief’s efficiency and found that Direct Relief meets the “Standards for Charity Accountability.”

Chronicle of Philanthropy: Direct Relief International Recognized in the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Annual List of “The Philanthropy 400″ for Seventh Year in a Row.

Worth Magazine: Direct Relief International Named One of Best U.S. Charities.
