Direct Relief Women Hosts Successful Fundraiser

The DirectRelief Women really understands the mission and the ethos of Direct Relief. These passionate, focused women have come together as a group to support Direct Relief through their mission, “Through education, service and financial giving Direct Relief Women dynamically supports the work of Direct Relief in creating healthy families around the world and around the corner.” They accomplish this mission through education, fundraising and engagement.

Nowhere has this been more evident than on the beautiful evening of May 17, 2012 when over 150 DirectRelief Women and their friends and families gathered at the stunning home of Elisabeth and Greg Fowler to hear an update on Direct Relief from CEO, Thomas Tighe and to hear a presentation from Dr. Hillary Mabeya. Dr. Mabeya is a Kenyan doctor whose specialty is obstetric fistula repair and who has started the Gynocare Center in the Eldoret Region of Kenya to provide health services to the underserved women of that region.

By all accounts the evening was a superb success. (The evening began with delicious hors d’oeuvres catered by local chef, Ashley Transki of Duo Catering and beverages including wines from the local Santa Barbara County wineries, beer from Firestone-Walker and a delicious cocktail featuring Russian Bear vodka. Dr. Mabeya and Thomas greeted the guests along with Board members and the Leadership Committee of the DirectRelief Women including event co-chairs, Kristin McWilliams and Kelly Walker. Then it was time for the education portion of the evening.

Following Dr. Mabeya’s heartfelt presentation, during which there were some very misty eyes, a two-item auction was held along with an opportunity for all attendees to participate in a “Stand Up and Be Counted” to support the Maternal Child Health programs. One lucky bidder will be heading for an amazing stay at the Rusty Parrot Lodge in Jackson, WY and will enjoy a personal wildlife tour, special spa treatments and other wonderful treats. 25 couples were the lucky bidders to attend a Square Dance Extravaganza hosted by two Direct Relief families. Over $110,000 was raised during the course of the evening and following the event. The organizing committee were thrilled with the turn out and the generous support shown by the guests.

Plans are already in place for 2013 so watch for your invitation!
